|Yoga, the Vagus Nerve, and Autism Spectrum Disorder||Louise Goldberg||Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience life’s stresses more intensely than others, with fewer resources to express and mitigate anxiety. Higher levels of cortisol may interfere with what Steven Porges calls the “vagal brake.” Yoga is an intervention exquisitely suited to children with ASD. Calming postures have been shown to slow the rhythm of breathing and activate the vagus nerve, triggering the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and restore mode). This promotes opportunities for self-regulation as well as connecting with others.
Participants will learn a series of postures that soothe and/or engage children while accommodating sensitivities to touch and reluctance to movement.
|Music, Rhythm, and Song in Kids' Yoga||Kira Willey||Join Kira for this high-energy, experiential workshop and learn how to easily incorporate rhythm and song into your classes, making them incredibly engaging and fun. Learn how music affects the brain, how it ties into movement, and how it can calm and focus children. Experience firsthand how vocalizing together can unify any group and increase a sense of belonging and trust. With Kira’s guidance, you’ll create your own rhythm games and simple songs to enhance the flow of movements, facilitate transitions, and help create structure in your classes. You’ll leave inspired, with tons of practical ideas to incorporate into your programs right away!|
